First American edition, first printing of A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, with a clipped signature from Stowe.

Octavo, iv, [5], 6-262pp, 2pp ads. Publisher’s brown cloth, with “KEY” stamped in blind to both covers, yellow endpapers. BAL’s binding style “C.” Cloth corners and edges of spine worn, exposing cardboard underneath. Small stains and rubbed marks to covers. Faint foxing along edges and endpapers. A solid, very good example. This is the first printing, with the imprint of only Hobart & Robbins listed on the copyright page.

With a clipped signature from Harriet Beecher Stowe affixed opposite title page. Inscription reads: “Very truly yours / H. B. Stowe — / April 12, 1870.”

Provenance: This copy includes a “Friends of the Detroit Public Library, Inc.” card, stating the copy was “Lent by Henry E. Candler.” The Detroit Public Library held a special exhibition featuring multiple copies of Stowe’s works in 1952.
