Octavo, ix, 467pp. Green cloth, title and illustrations stamped in gilt and black on spine and front cover. Blue cloth bookmark sewn-in. Later date printed on title page, copyright 1901. Solid text block, top edge dyed green, light wear to corners, laid-in clipping of book advertisement, previous owner’s name written on front free endpaper, occasional unopened pages, a near fine example. Complete with 14 full-page illustrations, including frontispiece. In publisher’s exceptionally rare dust jacket, toning to front and rear flaps, some wear to flap folds and joints, light soiling to covers, with toning and slight chipping to spine, a very good example. Signed by the author on title page.
Robley “Fighting Bob” Evans (1846-1912) was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. From 1907-1908, Evans commanded the Great White Fleet, which circumnavigated the globe and visited multiple countries to improve foreign relations and showcase U.S. naval strength.
