Description
Octavo, xiv, 1087pp. Blue cloth, title printed on spine and front cover, gilt over red. Stated “first printing” on copyright page. Publishers first state dust jacket, near fine, with $9.00 price on front flap, light wear along top edge of spine. Pencil marks on rear endpaper and Page 295, likely by Dulles himself. Signed on front cover by author: “For Allen Dulles, in memory of years of trouble + fulfillment, with affection and admiration. Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.” An incredible association copy between two Kennedy era figures.
Comments: As a presentation gift from Schlesinger to Dulles, Dulles took the book and made notes where issues concerning the CIA were involved. When he was specifically mentioned, he made corrections and noted “took Jacqueline aside and asked her to invite…” Dulles was asked to resign in 1961 from his post as CIA Director, after the Bay of Pigs disaster.
