Stated “first edition” on copyright page. Solid text block. Underlined passages relating to Governor Carl Sanders and Mrs. Sanders. Marbled endpapers.
From a limited edition of 200 copies, this being number 65, signed by Lady Bird Johnson on the limitation page. Additional inscription on the half-title: “For Carl and Betty Foy Sanders – who shared those White House years – and many others – with courage and constancy and rare friendship – Devotedly, Lady Bird Johnson / Lyndon B. Johnson / Christmas 1970.”
Carl E. Sanders (1925-2014) was the democratic governor of Georgia from 1963-1967, the youngest governor in the nation. He was considered a progressive on racial and segregation politics for his time, embracing federal laws, but refusing to denounce segregationists. He was term limited and ran for another term as governor in 1970, losing the democratic primary to Jimmy Carter.
