Description

The signed limited edition of President Harry S. Truman’s Address at the Conference on the Japanese Peace Treaty, inscribed to Treasury Secretary, John W. Snyder.

Octavo, [4], 12pp, [4]. Publisher’s tan morocco spine, tan paper boards, title stamped in gilt along the spine. Presidential seal in gilt on front board. From a limited edition of 60 copies for the personal distribution of President Harry Truman, this being number 6.

Inscribed by President Harry Truman on the front free endpaper: “To Hon. John W. Snyder / with every good wish for a happy Christmas. Harry Truman / December 25, 1951.”

A fine example of Truman’s scarce 1951 Christmas book, which commemorated the final peace treaty with Japan. In his remarks, Truman notes: “Japan today is a very different country from what it was six years ago. The old militarism has been swept away…It is now time to move ahead with the restoration of normal relations between Japan and the rest of the world.”

Other notable recipients of this book from President Truman include: Secretary of State Dean Acheson, Nato Ambassador Thomas Knight Finletter, and Stuart Symington.
