merican Speeches is a collection of speeches from October 1929 by British Prime Minister J. Ramsay MacDonald, during the first state visit of a Prime Minister to the United States.

Charles G. Dawes, who accompanied MacDonald on the trip, served as the 30th Vice President of the United States from 1925 to 1929 under President Calvin Coolidge and United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1929-1931. Born on August 27, 1865, in Marietta, Ohio, Dawes was a banker, military general, and diplomat before entering the political arena. He developed the Dawes Plan in 1924, for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The plan was designed to solve the World War I reparations problem that was stressing the economy of Germany and the international economic system. Prior to his vice presidency, Dawes served in World War I and was the first Director of the Bureau of the Budget in 1921. He passed away on April 23, 1951, in Evanston, Illinois.
