Description

First edition, first issue of And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street by Dr. Seuss, in the first edition dust jacket.

Quarto, [32pp]. Original color pictorial boards, white spine. The first issue, with no additional printings and matching dates on the title and copyright pages. Clean text throughout, short closed tear to first leaf of text, some offsetting to endpapers. Points of rubbing to periphery of boards, solid text block.

In the publisher’s second issue dust jacket, $1.00 on front flap, shallow chipping along top edge, closed tear to front panel along bottom edge, chip to rear panel along lower edge, bright colors and illustrations, a very good example. The shorts of the boy on the front cover were corrected from white to blue by the publisher, making this a first edition dust jacket, but the second state.

(Younger & Hirsch, 1). An exceptionally scarce work to find in the dust jacket.

And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street is the first children’s book by Theodor Seuss Geisel, published under the pen name of Dr. Seuss. The manuscript was rejected by 20+ publishers before Geisel ran into a college classmate, Mike McClintock, who was the new juvenile editor at Vanguard Press. The book received wide critical praise upon publication but saw little commercial success.
