The Muehlebach Hotel in Kansas City has been visited by every president since Theodore Roosevelt. Harry Truman, the local hero, stayed so often at the hotel it became known as White House West. Truman conducted all official meetings at the hotel, but stayed at his home in Independence, Missouri. During the 1976 Republican National Convention, President Ford and Gov. Ronald Reagan both stayed at the hotel, making pitches to delegates in a last-ditch effort to secure the presidential nomination.
