On June 3, 1948, President Harry S. Truman departed from Washington D.C. aboard his luxury train, the Ferdinand Magellan. The first of three campaign tours by train, known as the “Whistle Stop Tours” the trip would cover 9000 miles. Truman gave campaign speeches in eleven competitive states, and toured cities such as Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. With an approval rating in the 30’s, it was questionable if Truman could secure the Democratic nomination, with little doubt that he would lose to Thomas Dewey. His outreach to voters in small cities, the black population, and working-class voters was vital to his election in November 1948.
