Thick octavo, xv, [5], 998pp, [2]. Red cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine. The first printing, with a full number line on the copyright page. Solid text block. Light wear to cloth spine, front hinge at the half-title showing wear. Complete with 21 battlefield maps, illustrated endpapers. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $29.95 on the front flap, touch of wear from handling at head of the spine, a bright, near fine example.
This copy is inscribed on the half-title: “To Helmuts Feifs, from an old Marine VIP (very insignificant private), via your [daughter] + my daughter-in-law, Liz. Robert Leckie.”
Robert Leckie (1920-2001) was a United States Marine and military historian. His war memoir, Helmet For My Pillow, was an autobiographical look at Private First Class Robert Leckie’s service in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was assigned to the Pacific theater, where he participated in the Guadalcanal Campaign, Battle of Peleliu and Okinawa invasion. Helmet for my Pillow and With the Old Breed by Eugene Sledge, were the basis of the HBO miniseries, The Pacific. Robert Leckie died in 2001.
