First edition of Excursion through the Slave States by George W. Featherstonhaugh, published by John Murray in London in 1844.

Octavo, [two volumes], xxix, [map], 357pp, [1]; x, 394pp. Lacking the 16pp advertisements, as called for in Howes. Three quarter maroon leather with marbled boards, title in gilt on spine, raised bands with gilt decorations. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Fold-out map of the Eastern United States by J. & C. Walker, published by John Murray in London, May 14, 1844. This first edition was followed the same year by the first American edition, published by Harper & Brothers of New York.
