General Jonathan M. Wainwright was the Commander of Allied Forces in the Philippines at the time of their surrender to Japan in the early days of World War II. Upon the surrender of the Philippines and Corregidor, Wainwright became the highest ranking American prisoner of war during World War II. He was released in August of 1945. He received the Medal of Honor and returned to the United States with a ticker-tape parade in New York City.
