The United States House of Representatives Select Committee on Assassination was created on September 15, 1976 to investigate the assassinations of John F. Kennedy in 1963 and Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The public did not believe the findings of Johnson’s Warren Commission following Kennedy’s assassination, especially after the first public airing of the Zapruder film on Good Night America in 1975. Conspiracy materials and theories rose, and trust in the CIA and FBI fell. Subjects of the investigation in these reports include: ballistics, photographs, autopsies, fingerprints and handwriting, and audio recordings. The Committee concluded that King was killed by a single rifle shot from James Earl Ray, that “there is a likelihood” that it was a result of conspiracy, but not one that included a U.S. government agency.
