First edition, first state of Mark Twain’s Life On The Mississippi.
Octavo, 624pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine, embossed illustrations in gilt and black on spine and front cover. Gray-tan endpapers, with ownership inscription dated Christmas 1887 on front endpapers. All gilt edges. This is the first edition, first state, intermediate “B”, with the “St. Louis Hotel” depicted on pp. 443, but lacking tailpiece on pp. 441, which was removed at the request of Mrs. Clemens “who considered it morbid.” (BAL 3411) A near fine copy with only faint wear to top edge of spine.
