Twelvemo, [iv], 96pp. Publisher’s brown cloth, title stamped in gilt on cover. Light rubbing to boards, dampstain to rear cover, solid text block. Frontispiece portrait. Signed in pencil on the front flyleaf: “Presented to P.H. Smith, By the Author.”

William B. Westervelt was a veteran of the Civil War, serving with the 27th NY Infantry and the 17th NY Veteran Zouaves. After the war, he authored this book which was based on his private war diary. With the help of George Satterly Maharay, an expanded version of Westervelt’s diary was published in 1998, titled Lights and Shadows of Army Life: From Bull Run to Bentonville.
