Frontispiece portrait in Volume I, numerous foldout battle maps, full page illustrations and photographs. Previous ownership inscription on front free endpaper of each volume. In publisher’s scarce green dust jackets, light toning to spine, $7.00 price on spine, fine examples. Includes the appendix written by James G. Blaine, with “Personal Traits” of General Sherman. (Eicher, 576) An exceptionally scarce set, in fine jackets.
Comments: Published in 1875, Sherman’s memoirs were well received, with Mark Twain noting that he was “a master of narrative.” A second edition (revised and corrected) was published by D. Appleton & Company in 1886. General Sherman was mentioned as a possible Presidential candidate in 1884, but declined the nomination.
