A scarce Illinois regimental, well written, with first person accounts of the Sherman campaigns in Georgia.

Sergeant Major Stephen F. Fleharty (1836-1899) served in the 102nd Illinois Volunteers, serving in the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman’s March to the Sea in 1864. During the war, Fleharty contributed numerous articles to newspapers in Chicago, including The Argus and The Union. His writings were compiled in the 1990s by Philip Reyburn and Terry Wilson in “Jottings from Dixie: The Civil War Dispatches of Sergeant Major Stephen F. Fleharty.”

After the war, Fleharty served in the Illinois House of Representatives, the United States Congress, and as the personal secretary to Nebraska Governor Albinus Nance.
