In his preface, written in the midst of cries for Johnson’s impeachment, Distrunell notes “the conflict now unhappily existing between different political parties in the United States, is assuming a fearful importance, from the fact that the head of the Executive Department has placed himself in opposition to the Legislative branch of the nation.
