The Carlton Club of London is the original home of the Conservative Party of Great Britain. The private members only club was founded in 1832, in the St. James area of London. Traditionally, only men could become full members, women were limited to associate memberships only.

In 1975, when Margaret Thatcher became the Conservative Leader, she was given an honorary full membership, and remained the only woman to be a full member until 2008.
