Ashton Carter (1954-2022) had a government career spanning nearly 25 years, beginning with a position as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Policy in 1993 and ending as the Secretary of Defense from 2015-2017. During his time as Secretary of Defense, Carter fought for equality by ending the ban on transgender military officers and opening all military occupations to women, including infantry, armor and special operations units. William J. Perry (b. 1927) was Secretary of Defense from 1994-1997 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service to the United States in 1997.
