Octavo, xxx, 567pp. Black hardcover, title in gilt on spine. Stated “First printing” on copyright page. This copy appears unread. Previous owner’s name plate on front free endpaper. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, a fine example.

Inscribed on the half-title: “To Justice Anne Burke – with warm regards. Antonin Scalia.”

Anne M. Burke was the first woman to serve on the Illinois Supreme Court (2006 -2022), and the first to serve as Chief Justice (2019 – 2022). A graduate of DePaul University College of Law, she began her career as an attorney focused on disability rights and was a founder of the Chicago Special Olympics, which later grew into the international Special Olympics movement. Prior to her time on the state’s highest court, Burke served on the Illinois Appellate Court, First District (1995-2006).
