Octavo, viii, [2], 309pp, [1]. Full red morocco, title in gilt on spine, initials “W.L.S.” on front cover, decorative raised bands, gilt-ruled compartments. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, decorative gilt turn-ins and gilt-ruled board edges. Silk bookmark sewn-in. An early printing, with “F-I” on the copyright page and lacking the first edition statement. Light toning to leaves, solid text block. Inscribed on the front flyleaf: “To Bill Safire / with grateful appreciation for his superb work in our 1960 campaign and with every good wish from his friend. Dick Nixon. William Safire (1929-2009) served as a speechwriter for Richard Nixon during his 1960 and 1968 presidential campaigns. He joined the Nixon Administration in 1968 as a speechwriter for President Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew.
