First American edition of Roughing It by Mark Twain, first state. Octavo, xviii, 591pp, [1pp ads]. Brown cloth, title in gilt, embossed illustrations on spine and front cover. Two frontispiece illustrations with tissue cover. Peach end papers with edges sprinkled in brown. Previous ownership inscription on front free end paper dated 1872. First edition, state A, with “premises – said he / was occupying his /” on pp. 242, capitalized T and thirteenth for sixteenth on pp. 156, Eastern capitalized on pp. 330. (BAL 3337) A very good copy with light wear to the cloth and some wear to gilt on spine.
