CDV measures 4″ x 2.5″, lightly soiled on both sides, some loss along left edge. Note is written on Fortieth Congress stationery from the House of Representatives, signed “Respectfully, Schuyler Colfax.”
Schuyler Colfax (1823-1885) served as the 17th vice president of the United States during the Grant Administration and speaker of the House during the American Civil War and early years of Reconstruction. He served one term as President Grant’s vice president, losing the nomination for a second term to Senator Henry Wilson of Massachusetts.
