On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military, led by General Augusto Pinochet, overthrew the democratically elected government of President Salvador Allende in a coup d’état. The coup followed a period of political and economic instability, with increasing tensions between Allende’s socialist policies and opposition forces. The military bombed the presidential palace (La Moneda), where Allende died, reportedly by suicide. Following the coup, Pinochet established a military dictatorship that ruled Chile until 1990, characterized by widespread human rights violations, including the imprisonment, torture, and execution of political opponents. The United States was later revealed to have provided covert support to the coup. Pinochet spent the remainder of their life in Chile, eventually facing over 300 criminal charges for human rights violations, tax evasion, and embezzlement. He died in 2006.
