Quarto, 90pp. Black cloth spine, title in gilt on spine. Patterned paper over boards. Solid text block, a fine example, some leaves uncut along top edge. In the publisher’s dust jacket, touch of wear to front hinge, a near fine example. Housed in the matching slipcase, title printed on paper label affixed to spine and both panels. Small split along bottom edge, still sound. Complete with eight plates by Alexander King.

From a limited printing of 775 copies, this numbered 75. Signed on the limitation page by the author. Scarce in this condition.

The Emperor Jones is a tragic play by Eugene O’Neill. It premiered November 1, 1920 in the Provincetown Playhouse in New York City. The play was immediately successful, with 204 performances followed by a two-year US tour. Eugene O’Neill (1888-1953) was a renowned American playwright who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936, four Pulitzer Prizes for Drama, and the Tony Award for Best Play in 1957 for Long Day’s Journey into Night.
