Octavo, [two volumes], [2], liii, 366pp; xvi, 451pp. Blue cloth, decorative silver lettering on spine and front cover, ruled edges, top edge gilt. Binding is variant A, with silver decorations. Light rubbing to silver gilt illustration on spine of Volume I, one cm discoloration to silver gilt on front panel of Volume II. Frontispiece portrait with descriptive tissue cover in each volume. Complete set with 12 color plates, hundreds of photographic illustrations, three fold-out maps and panorama at rear of Volume II. Lacking the scarce dust jackets. (Roscove 305.C1.a) (Renard 1447). Bindings are solid. An excellent example.
Comments: This book details the journey of E.H. Shackleton and the Nimrod Expedition, to reach the South Pole and climb Mt. Erebus. He succeeded in reaching the Magnetic South Pole, but was forced to turn back, 97 miles short of his goal.
