Octavo, [two volumes], 576pp; 579pp, [8pp advertisements]. Green pebbled cloth, title in gilt on spine, illustration of “The Hartford” in gilt on covers. Yellow endpapers, clean text throughout. Light shelf wear along bottom edge of both volumes, front hinge of Volume II showing some wear. Complete with frontispiece portrait, 14 full page engravings (4 color) in Volume I; Frontispiece, 3 maps and 17 full page engravings (4 color) in Volume II. (Sabin 7149) Includes notes from Gideon Welles in pencil, correcting the text. This work is inscribed in both volumes to Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles. Inscription in Volume I reads: “To The Hon. Secretary of the Navy. Without your kind assistance + advice this work could not have been prepared. Chas. B. Boynton.” Additional inscription in Volume II reads: “To the Honorable Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, With the thanks of the author for his contributions. C.B. Boynton.” An exceptional association copy.
