Previous bookseller’s label to front endpaper. From the University of Cincinnati Robert S. Marx Law Library, with usual stamps to edges and endpapers, and label affixed to cover. Inscribed by the author on rear of front free endpaper to the Hon. Henry Lopes, and a handwritten note tipped in at the front.

The Right Honorable Henry Lopes, 1st Baron Ludlow (1828-1899) was a Queen’s Counsel, Justice of the Common Pleas, and Lord Justice of Appeal throughout his legal career. Author George Pitt-Lewis was of the Liberal Party and sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892, almost exactly the duration of Lopes’ time as Lord Justice of Appeal. Pitt-Lewis refers to Lopes as Lord Justice multiple times throughout their correspondence.
