Octavo, xiv, [errata leaf], 624pp. Full green morocco, decorative gilt border on covers. Title stamped in gilt on spine, raised bands with gilt floral embellishments. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers, turn-ins stamped in blind, decorative gilt board edges. No date on title page, Chapman and Hall with Piccadilly address, “Bradbury, Evans, and Co., Printers” on copyright page. Board edges, spine and joints rubbed. Faint sunning near top edge of back cover. Solid binding, endpapers cracked at front hinge, rear hinge reinforced. Occasional light foxing to interior. Thirty-eight illustrations by Hablot Knight Browne (“Phiz”), plus a frontispiece and vignette title page. Short closed tear to frontispiece at top of gutter. Label of “R. Broomhall, Bookbinder, &c. Stourbridge” on front pastedown. Features a nicely executed split fore-edge painting with a portrait of a young Charles Dickens and four scenes from the novel Martin Chuzzlewit.
