Description

The first edition of The Living White House by Lonnelle Aikman, inscribed by Lady Bird Johnson to the son of Apollo I astronaut, Ed White.

Octavo, 143pp. Red cloth, title stamped in gilt on the spine. Stated “First Edition” on the copyright page. Illustrated endpapers. In the publisher’s dust jacket, short closed tear along top edge, wear at tips of the spine, a very good example.

Signed on the title page by Lady Bird Johnson: “To Edward H. White III / with memories of a happy visit to this house / Lady Bird Johnson.”

Apollo 1 was the first crewed mission planned for NASA’s Apollo program, intended to test the command module in Earth orbit. On January 27, 1967, during a routine preflight test at Cape Kennedy, a fire broke out inside the sealed command module, killing astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger B. Chaffee.
