Octavo, 264pp. Red cloth, title in gilt on spine. The first printing, with “1” on copyright page. This copy appears unread. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $2.75 on front flap, faint sunning to spine, bright illustrations, a near fine example. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper shortly before the recipient’s death: “To Gen. Hugh Drum, with sincere regards. George C. Kenney, Gen. USAF.” A unique association piece between two distinguished Army Generals of World War II.
General Hugh A. Drum (1879-1951) was a career United States Army officer, who served in both World War I and World War II. During World War I he served as chief of staff of the First United States Army and commander of the First Army during the early days of World War II. He received the Army Distinguished Service Medal for his service during World War I and is the namesake of Fort Drum in upstate New York. General Drum retired at the age of 63 in 1943, and died in 1951. The author of this book, General George C. Kenney, was the commander of Allied Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific theater during World War II, under the direct command of General MacArthur. After the war, General Kenney become the first commander of the newly formed Strategic Air Command. He retired in 1951.
