Large octavo, xvi, 401pp. Green hardcover, title in gilt on cloth spine. Solid text block, faint foxing to endpapers, a near fine piece. Protected by acetate jacket, fine condition. Housed in the publisher’s slip case with title in green on paper label affixed to spine. (Howes M812) From a limited edition of 350 copies, this being number 67. Includes an ALS from Morison dated 7 December 1963 and penned on his personal stationery to the previous owner. Four small tape remnants from letter previously affixed to front free endpaper. Letter reads: “Dear Mr. Eaton / I am glad you like my Maritime History of Massachusetts. Your old neighbor at —. Samuel Eliot Morison.”
Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison (1887-1976) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and a 1964 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Morison is best remembered for his 15-volume set titled “History of United States Naval Operations in World War II” and biographies of Christopher Columbus and John Paul Jones.
