Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. (1914-2013) represented Virginia in the United States Senate from 1965-1983. He was a conservative Democrat, often disagreeing with core tenets of the Democratic Party, including efforts to desegregate schools. He ran for reelection as an independent in 1970 and won with a majority of the vote. Byrd retired in 1983.
