Harold Ickes (1874-1952) served as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1933 to 1946. Secretary Ickes played a significant role in the implementation of the New Deal through the Public Works Administration (PWA). He also worked to promote civil rights and supported desegregation efforts. He served under both President Franklin D. Roosevelt and President Harry S. Truman until he resigned in 1946. Harold Ickes died on February 3, 1952, in Washington, D.C.
