Description

First edition, third printing of The Savoy Operas by W.S. Gilbert in a fine binding.

Octavo, 698pp. Red morocco, gilt trimmed covers. Five raised bands, title in gilt on spine with detailed embellishments. All edges gilt. Gilt turn-ins and marbled endpapers. Stated “Reprinted March 1926, 1927” on copyright page. Solid text block, faint toning to spine, lightly bumped corners, a touch of wear to joints. Previous ownership bookplate on front endpaper. A vibrant, near fine example.

The Savoy Operas feature some of Gilbert’s most popular works, frequently in collaboration with composer Arthur Sullivan. A primary highlight from this copy is The Mikado, which is one of the most frequently performed theatre pieces of all time. Within the first year it opened (1885), it was estimated that at least 150 companies were producing the opera throughout Europe and America.
