Octavo, [ten volumes]. Full vellum with intricate gilt poppy design stamped on covers, titles stamped in gilt on spines. Illustrations printed on India paper, tipped-in, with tissue covers (10 frontispiece portraits plus 25 full-page plates). Some soiling to vellum, spine ends lightly rubbed, Volume VI bumped along the top edge with a few repaired nicks along the spine. Intermittent foxing and toning to endpapers and text pages. Untrimmed pages, Volumes I, II, VI and IX have some unopened leaves. Offsetting to pages 258-259 in Volume I and a few preliminary pages in Volume IV. Publication error in Volume VII with the signature for pages 337-352 replaced with a repeated signature of pages 113-128. Stated on limitation page: “Of this edition on large paper, only two hundred and fifty sets have been printed for America. This is No. 46.” (BAL 16168) An attractive set.
The Works of Edgar Allan Poe published by Stone & Kimball of Chicago was published in a trade edition issued in two bindings, one in cloth selling for $15.00 a set and the other in half crushed levant selling for $40.00. This limited large paper edition, which was handsomely bound in vellum, sold for $50.00. The set contains Poe’s tales, poems, literary criticism and miscellaneous works.
