The publishing history of the first English edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin is problematic. According to BAL, the copy published by Clarke and Company in April of 1852 is the true first state. BAL also concedes that the earliest advertisements for the English edition noted only 300 pages, which is difficult to verify. To further complicate the situation, there were a number of pirated editions published in London in 1852. This copy from Clarke & Co. notes “forty Illustrations,” which is specific to the third printing.
