Description
Thick octavo, xxiv, 1521pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine, replica signature on front panel in gilt. Light toning to cloth, with some separation at seams. Stated “first edition, second printing” on copyright page. Contains some notes, presumably from Dr. Smyser himself. In publishers dust jacket, near fine, with $22.50 price on front flap, light wear from handling at top edge of spine, otherwise bright. Inscribed by Secretary Kissinger on half title: “To Dick Smyser / Who tutored me on Vietnam with perhaps limited success. With high regard, gratitude and good wishes. Henry Kissinger.” An interesting historical inscription.
Comments: Book is inscribed by Secretary Henry Kissinger to William Richard “Dick” Smyser, a US Foreign Service officer. Dr. Smyser traveled with Kissinger to the secret meetings in China, paving the way for President Nixon to open diplomatic relations. As the inscription in this book notes, he was also a councilor to Secretary Kissinger. Dr. Smyser passed away in 2018.
