Octavo, [2], 320pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on covers. The first printing, with no additional printings noted. Light dust along top edge of text block, otherwise fine. Solid text block. Complete with frontispiece portrait and 22 illustrated plates. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $5.00 on the front flap, light soiling to panels, wear at the head of the spine, short closed tear, a scarce example in this condition. (Coleman, 233)

Admiral Hugh Rodman (1859-1940) served more than forty years in the United States Navy, holding several major commands. He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1880 and took part in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. During World War I he commanded Battleship Division Nine, which operated with the British Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir David Beatty. From 1919 to 1921, he was Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. After retiring in 1923, he continued to represent the Navy on official occasions, including attending the coronation of King George VI in 1937.
