Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt spoke at Texas Christian University on March 22, 1961, where she favorably compared the first days in office of President Kennedy with her late husband. She noted during the lecture: “There is a great deal of similarity. They both come to office in difficult times. Congress now is not under the same compelling crisis it was when my husband came to office…” A reference to the Great Depression, which was gripping the country in 1933.
