John Wingate Thorton (1818-1878) was a New England lawyer, historian, and antiquarian. Thorton practiced law in Boston after graduating from Harvard in 1840, the year this book was inscribed. He was a founding member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Vice-President of the American Statistical Association, Vice-President of the Prince Society, and an elected member of the American Antiquarian Society in 1855.
