Lt. Colonel Wingate Charlton (1913-2007) received the Distinguished Service Cross during World War II, the highest honor for gallantry from the United States. On April 19, 1945, his tank unit took out numerous German positions near Hamburg, earning him the American honors. Throughout life, he was an accomplished poet and a Fellow at the Royal Society of Arts.
