Following the death of President Franklin Roosevelt in April 1945, Mrs. Roosevelt continued to be an advocate for the establishment of the United Nations. Within a year, she became the first woman to represent the United States as a delegate to the United Nations. As a delegate, she chaired the first Commission on Human Rights and oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted in 1948.
