Description

Three separate draft copies of Why Not The Best? by Jimmy Carter, from the desk of his editor, Hal Gulliver of The Atlanta Constitution.

All three drafts with copious notes by Jimmy Carter. The autobiography was written entirely by Jimmy Carter, with the first draft housed at the Carter Library in Atlanta. These three draft copies were delivered to Hal Gulliver at The Atlanta Constitution for his editorial suggestions and edits. Housed in archival folder, acid free sleeves. Approximately 450 individual pages, most with notes and edits from Jimmy Carter. This set includes a signed first edition of Why Not The Best? signed by Jimmy Carter on the front free endpaper. An exceptional piece of presidential campaign history.

This set includes editorial suggestions for Governor Carter, with comments like: “Jimmy, this is fine, especially for an initial effort on one of these [memoirs]. You write like an engineer on occasion.” Some of the more nuanced questions include references to Jimmy Carter’s father, James Earl Carter, and his style of discipline on his children. It’s an interesting look at a future president creating the narrative of his life, for a book which would go on to become a bestseller.
