Anwar el-Sadat (1918-1981) served as the President of Egypt from 1970 until his assassination on October 6, 1981. He won the Nobel Peace Prize, along with the Prime Minister of Israel, Menachem Begin, for their work to secure peace between Israel and Egypt in 1978.
