Octavo, 752pp. Black hardcover, black cloth spine, title stamped in gilt. Illustrated endpapers with maps from World War II. Book has been previously read, with light wear from handling, pencil notes on front pastedown endpaper, notation of “RL” on bottom edge of text block. This is a book club edition, but in a first state dust jacket. Publisher’s dust jacket with $19.95 retail price on front flap, near fine, with a touch of shelf wear, but an overall excellent example.
Inscription reads: “To General David Jones, 9th Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Looking at the challenges faced by the first Chairman provides a yardstick for measuring how far, with your help, the Armed Forces have come in fifty years! H. Hugh Shelton. General, USA, CJCS (14th). 1 DEC 2000.” An exceptional association copy.
General David C. Jones was the ninth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving President Carter and President Reagan. He noted that one of the great honors of his life was to escort General Omar Bradley around the Pentagon shortly before his death in 1981. The signatory of this book was the fourteenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, H. Hugh Shelton. Shelton served under Presidents Clinton and Bush, where he helped to navigate the initial events following September 11th, retiring at the end of September 2001. General Jones died in 2013.
