Signed first edition of Crowded Hours by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, inscribed to Carrie Astor Wilson.

Octavo, 355pp. Maroon cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine and front cover. First edition, but lacking the Scribner’s “A” on copyright page. Light rubbing to spine, solid text block, clean text. Complete with 24 illustrations. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $3.00 price on front flap, lacking part of spine, tape repairs to verso, heavily worn. This copy is inscribed by Alice Roosevelt Longworth, the eldest child of President Theodore Roosevelt, to American heiress and socialite, Carrie Astor Wilson. Inscription on the front free endpaper: “Mrs. Carrie Wilson, with all good wishes. Alice Longworth. December 15th 1933.”

Alice Roosevelt Longworth (1884-1980) was the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee. She was married to Nicholas Longworth III, 38th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, until his death in 1931. Alice would spend the remainder of her life in Washington DC, working through political circles and supporting causes she believed in. She died in 1980 at the age of 96.
