Octavo, [5], 314pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. Light rubbing to bottom edge of cloth boards, some rubbing to title on spine. Clean text throughout. Ownership notation on front pastedown endpaper. In publisher’s dust jacket, $3.00 on front flap, light toning to spine, short closed tears along top edge, dampstain to verso, a very good example. Signed on the front free endpaper: “J.M. Wainwright. General. U.S.A.”
General Jonathan M. Wainwright was the Commander of Allied Forces in the Philippines at the time of their surrender to Japan in the early days of World War II. Upon the surrender of the Philippines and Corregidor, Wainwright became the highest ranking American prisoner of war. He would be released in August of 1945. He would receive the Medal of Honor and return to the United States with a ticker-tape parade in New York City.
