Elephant Folio, [12 plates]. Publisher’s printed boards, quarter leather on spine. Hinges reinforced, modern leather on spine and corners. Boards soiled, notable wear to rear board. Full piece measures 18″ x 26″, individual maps fold out to 26′ x 36′, 6 fold-out. This work is complete with 12 fold-out plates, composing six large maps of the State of Ohio, all chromolithography by Julius Bien of New York. Occasional toning and foxing to plates, all with solid hinges.
John Strong Newberry (1822-1892) was an American geologist and chief geologist of the 2nd Ohio Geological Survey from 1869 to 1874. He made significant contributions to the geological understanding of coal and iron resources in Ohio. In 1884, Newberry joined the U.S. Geological Survey and helped found the Geological Society of America.
